FROM THE WORD

Luke 5:33–39 – Loving Jesus Above Empty Religion

April 19, 2026

Jesus confronts a religious mindset that confuses outward practice with true devotion. In Luke 5:33–39, He shows that fasting, prayer, and other spiritual disciplines are not about appearances or earning God’s favor, but about love for Him. The old covenant exposed sin and pointed forward to Christ, but it cannot be mixed with the new life of grace that comes through faith in Jesus. The call of this passage is to love Christ above all, reject both empty religiosity and fleshly self-rule, and live in the freedom that submits itself to Him.
