In Luke 5, Jesus teaches the word of God, displays His authority through the miraculous catch of fish, and brings Simon Peter to humility, confession, and surrender. The passage shows Jesus calling people not only to hear Him, but to follow Him and be used in gathering others into the kingdom of God.
Less of a sermon and more of a Bible study, the full congregation worked together through Luke 5:1–11 using the DIG Bible Study Method. As the church studied the passage together, the focus was on learning how to observe the (D) details of the text, see how those details are (I) interwoven, and recognize how (G) God reveals Himself through His word.
Two main reasons were given for using this method. First, this kind of equipping is part of the preacher’s calling: to preach the gospel, equip people, and send them out. Second, the church should be equipped to study and handle Scripture together, and this was offered as a practical tool for personal Bible reading, group study, and teaching others.
