Unable to reach Jesus through a crowded house, friends lower a paralyzed man through the roof. Jesus first addresses the man’s deepest need by forgiving his sins. When the religious leaders question His authority, He commands the man to rise and walk, demonstrating that the Son of Man has authority to forgive.
Only God can remove our guilt, and Jesus bears that guilt Himself at the cross. Religious proximity and outward activity cannot cleanse our hearts. We are called to trust Him with desperate faith, come before Him for forgiveness, and become friends who persist in bringing others to the Savior.
